About Foothills Suri Alpacas

Foothills farmhouse.

Owned and operated by Holger Caban and Kathleen Cullen, Foothills Suri Alpacas is located on our hilly acreage in the southernmost section of the Selkirk Mountain Range, just below Mount Spokane and a few miles outside of Spokane, Washington. Our ranch is easy to find and we have guest facilities for visitors to spend the night.

We are both psychotherapists during the week, where we listen to and work with many kinds of human problems. After 25 years of working in the mental health field, we decided we wanted to work on our own mental health by adding alpacas to our lives. In 2002, as a Christmas gift to each other, we purchased our first alpacas. We now have 40 alpacas on our ranch.

Going down to the barn in the evening and on weekends, we enjoy hearing hummmm” - the sounds of alpaca meditation? Perhaps, but in any case it is as relaxing as meditation for us.

We have enjoyed and learned from participation in the Suri Network education and research committees, the WSU Camelid Research Committee, serving on the executive board of our local Alpaca Association and, most recently, becoming Charter Members of the National Alpaca Sweepstakes. Holger’'s Employee Assistance business is named Solution Resources which also serves to define our goals with alpacas. Our solution to a successful Alpaca business is the continual enhancement of a superior herd. Our resources are the suris we choose to breed based on their phenotype while maintaining genetic health through diversity.

Our objective in breeding alpacas is to draw from the best of Peruvian and Bolivian blood lines to produce truly superb North American alpacas with all of the desirable fiber characteristics and conformational qualities that have made our alpacas successful in the show ring and attractive to breeders everywhere.
